About Virginia State University

Virginia State University (VSU) is a historically black public land-grant university in Ettrick, Virginia. Established in 1882 as the Virginia Normal and Collegiate Institute, it is one of the eleven colleges and universities that comprise the Commonwealth of Virginia's system of higher education.

VSU offers a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate programs across its five academic schools: the College of Agriculture, the College of Business, the College of Education, the College of Engineering and Technology, and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Grading and GPA System

At Virginia State University, grades are assigned on a letter scale from A to F, with accompanying grade point values assigned as follows:

  • A: 4 grade points
  • B: 3 grade points
  • C: 2 grade points
  • D: 1 grade point
  • F: 0 grade points

The university also utilizes plus (+) and minus (-) designations for each letter grade, with the following point values:

  • A+: 4.33 grade points
  • A-: 3.67 grade points
  • B+: 3.33 grade points
  • B-: 2.67 grade points
  • C+: 2.33 grade points
  • C-: 1.67 grade points
  • D+: 1.33 grade points
  • D-: 0.67 grade points

Cumulative grade point averages (GPAs) are calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credit hours attempted. At VSU, a minimum GPA of 2.0 (C) is required for undergraduate students to remain in good academic standing.
