About Mississippi State University

Mississippi State University (MSU) is a public research university located in Starkville, Mississippi, in the southeastern United States. It was founded in 1878 as a land-grant institution and has since grown to become the largest university in the state of Mississippi. MSU offers over 175 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral degree programs across 12 colleges and schools, including agriculture and life sciences, business, education, engineering, and arts and sciences.

Grading and GPA System

At Mississippi State University, the grading and GPA system is as follows:
  • A (90-100) = 4.0
  • B (80-89) = 3.0
  • C (70-79) = 2.0
  • D (60-69) = 1.0
  • F (below 60) = 0
In addition to letter grades, MSU also uses plus and minus grades. A plus grade adds 0.3 points to the GPA, while a minus grade subtracts 0.3 points from the GPA. To calculate a student's GPA, MSU assigns points to each letter grade and then divides the total points by the total number of credit hours attempted. For example, if a student earns an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course and a B (3.0) in a 2-credit course, their GPA would be calculated as follows: [(4.0 x 3) + (3.0 x 2)] / 5 = 3.6 GPA
